The great Google irony

This morning I attended a Google media briefing at the DD Campus. Never before has one event sparked off so many thoughts in my mind – sadly, in this case most of them are negative (expect more here, and even here).

As for the irony…

Google CIO Douglas Merrill, did a very effective job in making sure that we understand Google’s mission statement:

Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.

This is a great and noble mission, and I’d believe him if his most repeated and memorable quotes from the day weren’t:

“It is not our corporate policy to talk about…”

“We don’t generally comment on…”

These boiler print answers for just about every question whether about their future plans for SA or even how many staff they have locally.

So in short, Google believes you should know everything, about everyone – except themselves.
