Your money is christian enough, but your staff aint!
For about 5 years Missing Link has had a staff charity initiative where once a month we chose a charity to help, in the form of a R50k fund raising video and/or presentation.
At the end of last year we created a video for an amazing lady that was climbing mountains to raise money for an equally amazing charity, Door of Hope:
In August 1999 we installed a “hole in the wall” or “baby bin” in the wall of the Mission Church, where babies can be placed 24 hours a day. A sensor alerts the people in the house whenever a newcomer has arrived. We will come to fetch the baby and will thereafter begin caring for him/her.
We were so taken by Door of Hope that we contacted them and made an extra fund-raiser video for them directly. That’s two videos of R50k each.
All good so far.
Our financial manager Janine has a perk that allows her two days a month in order to do volunteer work, something she feels very strongly about. When she saw the Door of Hope video, she knew that these were the guys that she wanted to help, so she contacted them. This was their response.
“No, you’re not a born-again christian.”

What?!
I couldn’t believe it until I saw their site:
Applicants must be:
- Born-again believers and disciples of Jesus Christ
- Signed copy of Doctrine of Faith
Clearly garden variety christians are not good enough. I must confess that didn’t realise that god was so picky, also I really can’t imagine that the abandoned babies care, what they need is love and attention, something Janine was wanting to give - not indoctrination.
So, they can keep their video and I hope that the kids benefit from it, but I think that their hypocrital and biggoted attitude is a keen reflection on what is wrong with organised religion these days. Well, that and all those wars.
Just one more reason that I’m proudly atheist…!
